Wegovy (Injection and pill)

A Proven Medication for Long-Term Weight Loss

If you have struggled with diets that don’t work or weight that always comes back, you are not alone. Many people need more than lifestyle changes to achieve lasting results. Wegovy (semaglutide) is an FDA-approved GLP-1 medication that helps patients lose weight safely and keep it off.

Wegovy is now available in three forms, so you and your provider can choose the approach that fits your life:

  • Wegovy Injection (2.4 mg) — once-weekly injectable, the original and most established formulation
  • Wegovy HD Injection (7.2 mg) — the higher-dose injectable for patients who need additional support
  • Wegovy Pill (25 mg) — a once-daily oral tablet, the first oral GLP-1 approved for weight loss

At PrecisionMD Wellness and Weight Loss, our providers prescribe all three formulations for patients in our Decatur and Madison clinics and through telemedicine across Alabama.

How Wegovy Works

Wegovy is a type of medication called a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It works by:

Reducing appetite and helping you feel full sooner
Decreasing cravings and emotional eating
Slowing digestion so you stay satisfied longer
Supporting healthier blood sugar and insulin levels

Combined with healthy lifestyle changes, Wegovy can lead to significant and sustainable weight loss.

Benefits of Wegovy

Patients taking Wegovy often experience:

Who Is a Candidate for Wegovy?

You may qualify for Wegovy if you:

Wegovy HD (Semaglutide 7.2 mg Injection)

Wegovy HD is the highest-dose injectable formulation of semaglutide, designed for patients who have progressed through the standard Wegovy dose schedule and need additional support to reach their goals.

Who Is Wegovy HD For?

Wegovy HD may be right for you if:

  • You have completed the standard Wegovy dose escalation (reaching 2.4 mg) and are looking for stronger appetite suppression
  • You and your provider agree that a higher dose is the appropriate next step in your treatment plan
  • You want to maximize the weight loss benefit of semaglutide before considering a medication change

What to Expect

Wegovy HD is still a once-weekly subcutaneous injection, administered the same way as standard Wegovy. The higher dose delivers more potent appetite suppression and is the most effective injectable semaglutide option currently available. Side effects are similar to standard Wegovy, though GI symptoms may be more pronounced as your body adjusts.

Ask your PrecisionMD provider whether Wegovy HD is a good fit for your current treatment plan.

Wegovy Pill (Oral Semaglutide 25 mg)

The Wegovy Pill is the first oral GLP-1 medication approved for weight loss in the United States, and it delivers results comparable to the original Wegovy injection. If you have been interested in Wegovy but prefer not to inject, the pill gives you the same proven medication in a once-daily tablet.

How the Wegovy Pill Works

The Wegovy Pill contains the same active ingredient as the injectable: semaglutide. It works the same way, by reducing appetite, slowing digestion, and helping you feel full longer. In clinical trials, patients taking the Wegovy Pill lost an average of 14 to 16% of their body weight, comparable to the injectable formulation.

One thing to know: the Wegovy Pill must be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than a small sip of water, or taking other oral medications. This is a daily routine adjustment worth discussing with your provider.

Who Is the Wegovy Pill For?
  • Patients who qualify for Wegovy but prefer an oral option over injections
  • Patients who have injection anxiety or needle aversion
  • Patients looking for a more discreet treatment option
  • Patients who can consistently take a pill on an empty stomach each morning
Cost

The Wegovy Pill self-pay price starts at $149 per month for the lowest dose and $299 per month for the highest dose. Insurance coverage varies. Our team will work with your insurance on prior authorization, and if coverage is not available, we will walk you through the self-pay options.

Ask your PrecisionMD provider whether the Wegovy Pill is a good fit for your goals and daily routine.

How is Wegovy different from Zepbound?
Both are weekly GLP-1 injections, but Zepbound acts on both the GLP-1 and GIP pathways, while Wegovy only works on the GLP-1 pathway. Some patients respond better to one than the other.
Not in the strict, traditional sense. At PrecisionMD, we don’t require you to follow a rigid or restrictive diet plan. Instead, we emphasize balanced meals and sustainable habits that support long-term health and weight maintenance. While Wegovy helps regulate appetite and metabolism, the best results come when it’s combined with practical lifestyle changes rather than temporary dieting.
Many patients notice changes within the first 1–2 months, with progress continuing as treatment goes on. For others, results may take longer, since response depends on factors like metabolism, overall health, and the specific medication prescribed. The focus is always on a safe, individualized plan that supports steady, lasting success.
Some patients use Wegovy long-term as part of a comprehensive weight management plan. Your provider will guide you based on your goals, results, and overall health.
Medications like Wegovy regulate appetite and metabolism. If you stop using them without also building healthy, sustainable habits, weight regain is likely — much like how blood pressure or cholesterol often rise again if medication is discontinued. Our focus is on pairing treatment with nutrition, activity, and lifestyle changes so that, over time, you’re in the best position to maintain your results, even if medication is no longer needed.
It’s possible, particularly if you have additional risk factors such as insulin resistance, PCOS, or other metabolic concerns. Your provider will review your medical history and labs to decide whether Wegovy is an appropriate option for you.

At PrecisionMD, we work directly with your insurance company to determine if Wegovy is covered under your plan. Our team handles the prior authorization process and, when needed, will file appeals — we work hard to give you the best chance of approval.

Coverage depends on your specific insurance. Some plans include obesity medications, while others do not, or may exclude Wegovy specifically. If Wegovy is not covered, you still have options:

  • Novo Nordisk’s direct-pay program for Wegovy is available for about $499 per month.

This program allows you to get the medication directly from the manufacturer’s pharmacy at a lower cash price when insurance coverage isn’t available.

In clinical studies, patients taking Wegovy lost an average of 15% of their body weight when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. This makes Wegovy one of the most effective weight loss medications currently available.

By comparison:

  • Zepbound (tirzepatide) averages 15–20% weight loss

  • Phentermine and Qsymia typically result in 5–10% weight loss

  • Contrave often leads to 5–8% weight loss

These are averages — individual results vary widely. Some patients lose more, others less, depending on metabolism, health conditions, lifestyle, and consistency with treatment. At PrecisionMD, we focus on helping you reach safe, sustainable results that work for your body.

The most common side effects of Wegovy are mild digestive symptoms, such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or stomach upset. These usually improve over time, especially with gradual dose increases. Some patients may also experience fatigue or decreased appetite.

Serious side effects are rare but can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, or other complications. At PrecisionMD, we start you on the lowest effective dose, increase slowly, and monitor you closely to minimize side effects and keep your treatment safe.

Wegovy HD is a higher-dose formulation of semaglutide (7.2 mg versus the standard 2.4 mg). It is the same once-weekly injectable medication, but delivers a stronger dose for patients who have progressed through the standard dose schedule and want to maximize the effectiveness of semaglutide before considering a different medication. Not every patient will need or qualify for Wegovy HD. Your provider will guide you based on your response to treatment and your overall goals.

The Wegovy Pill is a once-daily oral tablet that contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. It was FDA-approved in December 2025 and produces comparable weight loss results to the injectable. The main differences are the format (pill vs. injection) and the dosing requirement: the pill must be taken on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking. For patients who prefer not to inject, the Wegovy Pill is a strong alternative. Self-pay pricing starts at $149 per month.
